By Aaron Humes: Police say they have a 65-year-old man detained as they investigate a shooting incident in rural Belize District.

On Wednesday, April 8, about 9:56 p.m., police received information that 24-year-old Daniel Aldana, a Belizean wood carver of Santana Village, Belize District, had been transported to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital (KHMH) with a gunshot injury. Subsequently, officers visited the KHMH, where they observed Aldana with a gunshot wound to his arm.

Initial investigations revealed that about 4:00 p.m., Daniel Aldana and his uncle, 65-year-old James Michael Aldana, were hunting in an area known as Salt Creek. Allegedly, James Aldana attempted to retrieve his licensed 20-gauge shotgun, which had been resting against a tree, when he reportedly tripped on a stump, causing him to accidentally discharge the gun as Daniel Aldana attempted to assist him, resulting in the injury.

Daniel Aldana is listed in stable condition. Police have since detained James Michael Aldana along with the licensed shotgun as investigations continue.
