By Breaking Belize News Staff: A 19-year-old Brodies warehouse attendant is spending his first night on remand after being arraigned on three serious charges involving a minor.
Ashmar Rodriguez, 19, appeared unrepresented before a Senior Magistrate in Court #7 on Thursday, where he was read three counts of unlawful sexual intercourse with a minor under the age of 14.
The allegations, which date back eight months, recently surfaced after a report was made by the minor.
Because the charges are indictable offenses, the Senior Magistrate explained to Rodriguez that the matter is one for trial in the High Court and that no plea would be taken at this stage. The court’s role on Thursday was limited to formally reading the charges and ensuring that he understood them.
Police allege that the offenses occurred once in August 2025 and twice in September 2025, at times when the complainant was 12 years old.
Due to the nature of the offenses, bail was denied, and Rodriguez was remanded to the Belize Central Prison until June 4, 2026.
The case is expected to proceed to the High Court in due course.
