By Breaking Belize News Staff: A 38-year-old Belize City man was remanded to the Belize Central Prison on Tuesday after being arraigned on a charge of keeping unlicensed ammunition, although he insists the bullets were planted on him by the arresting officer and that he was abused in police custody.
Justin Stephen Goff, an unemployed resident of Belize City, appeared unrepresented before the Belize City Magistrate’s Court where he was read a single charge of kept unlicensed ammunition. Notably, he was brought to court unable to open one eye and claims police beat him up.
Police allege that on Friday, April 3, 2026, Goff was found in possession of three live rounds of ammunition—two bronze S&B brand rounds and one bronze Aguila brand round.
Goff pleaded not guilty and was granted permission to explain his defense before the Chief Magistrate.
He told the court that the bullets were planted on him by the same officer who arrested and charged him.
According to Goff, he had been sleeping under a shed where he often stayed because there was electricity available at the location. He claimed officers approached him asking where a gun was, and alleged that one officer then removed three bullets from his own firearm and told him, “This dah fuh you.”
Goff further claimed that the three rounds shown in court were the same bullets he saw the officer remove from his gun. He told the Chief Magistrate that he understood the charge could carry a prison sentence of up to three months, but said it was an allegation he intended to fight because he believed he was being “chance.”
The Chief Magistrate specifically noted Goff’s allegation that the ammunition was planted by police and confirmed that the officer he referred to was the same officer who arrested and charged him.
However, due to the nature of the offense, bail was denied at the lower court level, and Goff was remanded to the Belize Central Prison until July 7, 2026, when he is due back in court.
