By Aaron Humes: 18-year-old Brooklyn Lyttle made history for Belize in the U-20 Long Jump competition at the 53rd CARIFTA Games in St. George’s, Grenada over the weekend.

With an impressive leap of 6.16 meters or 20 feet, 2.52 inches, Lyttle claimed 1st place, securing gold for Belize on her final jump. She fouled her first two attempts but cleared 5.98 meters on her third, setting the pace. Lyttle was the only athlete to clear six meters or 20 feet, doing so on her fourth and sixth attempts, pushing Rivka Goede of Curacao to second and Seannah Parsons of Trinidad and Tobago to third. The standing women’s outdoor world record is 7.52 meters or 24 feet, 8 inches, set back in June of 1988 by the then-Soviet Union’s Galina Christyakova in St. Petersburg, then known as Leningrad.

Nyasha Harris competed in the 100-meter dash on Day 1 of the Games, delivering a solid performance in the U-20 Girls category, recording 12.05 seconds in the semi-finals and finishing ninth overall, just shy of qualification for the finals.

The Belize Athletics Association (BAA) and Olympic and Commonwealth Games Association (BOCGA) paid tribute to both young women and coach Fred Evans, their results continuing a run of success at the Games for Belize dating back to 2022 when the meet returned after a COVID-induced cancellation. This included multiple gold medals for Demetrie Meyers over middle distance and Lyttle’s bronze in the long jump in 2023.
