By Zoila Palma:  The United Nations says that attacks against civilians and civilian infrastructure violate international humanitarian law.

“Even wars have rules.

Attacks against civilians and civilian infrastructure violate international humanitarian law.

No matter where they occur, they are unacceptable, unjustifiable, and must stop immediately.

Civilians are not a target,” the U.N. noted.

The statement comes after U.S. President Donald Trump warned Iran that “a whole civilization will die tonight” if Iran fails to meet a new deadline to reach an agreement that includes reopening of the Strait of Hormuz.

The U.N. Security Council is scheduled to meet today to vote on a resolution on the situation in the Strait of Hormuz.

The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most critical shipping routes linking the Gulf to global markets.

About 1/5 of the global oil pass through it.
