By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): Belizeans returning from the Easter weekend were met with an unwelcome reality, another sharp increase in fuel prices and no relief in sight.
Leader of the Opposition, Tracy Taegar Panton, is calling out the Government of Belize for what she describes as a complete failure to respond to the growing financial pressure on citizens. With premium gasoline jumping by 86 cents and regular by 80 cents per gallon, drivers across the country are now paying some of the highest prices in the region.
In Belize City, premium fuel has climbed to $14.62 per gallon, while regular sits at $13.82. For many, that’s not just a number, it’s the difference between making ends meet or falling behind.
Panton says the timing could not be worse. Easter is one of the busiest travel periods in Belize, and instead of relief, families and businesses were hit with higher costs.
She argues that the government’s silence on relief measures, whether tax reductions, subsidies, or targeted support, shows a troubling disconnect from everyday Belizeans.
And the impact doesn’t stop at the pump.
When fuel prices rise, everything else follows. Transportation costs increase. Food prices climb. Small businesses struggle to stay afloat. Farmers and entrepreneurs feel the squeeze.
The Opposition is now demanding immediate action, urging the government to review fuel taxes and introduce measures to cushion the blow.
For many Belizeans, patience is running thin.
As Panton put it clearly: enough is enough.
