By Zoila Palma: Two boats carrying humanitarian aid from Mexico to Cuba have been located days after losing contact in the Caribbean, according to organisers of the mission.
The vessels were found by the Mexican Navy, and all crew members were confirmed safe, BBC reports.
A spokesman for the Nuestra America Convoy said the boats — Friendship and Tiger Moth — had been reported missing after failing to arrive in Cuba as scheduled. No explanation was given for the temporary disappearance.
The vessels departed Isla Mujeres in Mexico’s Quintana Roo state on March 20 and were expected to reach Havana earlier in the week. Nine crew members from Poland, France, Cuba and the United States were on board.
Organizers confirmed that both boats have resumed their journey to Havana, maintaining that the convoy remains on course to deliver urgently needed humanitarian supplies to Cuba.
The aid mission is part of wider efforts led by volunteers and non-governmental groups responding to shortages on the island following a US-imposed oil blockade.
