By Zoila Palma:  Former Cayo West Area Representative Jorge ‘Milin’ Espat says that he was shot at while visiting his land near the adjacency zone with Guatemala on Thursday.

“As many ppl may know, I own a property that has been in my family for generations which borders the adjacency zone with Guatemala. As owner it is my right to walk my land whichever way I please and also to carry my license firearm as long as I am in Belize territory. Today, as I have done on many occasions, I was walking the area close to the adjacency zone, when someone on the Guatemalan side started firing shots,” Espat said.

Espat says that the Guatemalan police responded and provided assistance.

Espat thanked the police for their professionalism.

“Many times I have said it, I will not be intimidated by people who are squatting on my land, I know my rights and also know that I am a responsible citizen, who would never enter another country with an unlicensed firearm,” Espat added.

Espat further said that, “‘Not a blade a grass’, what dah fu Belize stays in Belize, and we should not be afraid to walk any corner of our country, at least that’s my stance.”
