By Zoila Palma: Beyond infrastructure and economic policy, the government is expanding investments in data systems, health programmes, and social support as part of its broader development strategy, Minister Osmond Martinez said during his budget presentation on Wednesday.
Martinez highlighted the role of the Statistical Institute of Belize in strengthening data-driven decision-making, including the launch of a national strategy for statistics and new digital tools.
“In 2025, it launched the country’s first government-endorsed National Strategy for the Development of Statistics,” he noted.
He also pointed to health sector gains under the Global Fund HIV Programme, where Belize exceeded its targets for prevention and treatment coverage.
“Belize exceeded its targets: reaching 111 percent of prevention goals and 187 percent of PrEP coverage,” Martinez said.
Additionally, government expanded support for vulnerable households, including nutritional assistance and community-based health services.
“A healthier population is more productive, more resilient, and better equipped to contribute to national development,” he stated.
Martinez emphasized that these social investments are integral to long-term economic growth and national resilience.
