By Zoila Palma: Government has adopted a proactive approach to managing external economic shocks, according to Minister Osmond Martinez, who pointed to global crises and domestic policy responses during his budget presentation.
Martinez outlined the impact of COVID-19, global inflation, and geopolitical conflicts, noting that Belize continues to navigate external pressures beyond its control. He said targeted interventions were implemented to protect key sectors and stabilize prices.
“When global inflation surged… this Government acted to cushion the impact,” Martinez said.
He pointed to fuel subsidies for agro-producers and the transport sector as measures designed to protect consumers and maintain food price stability.
“This is proactive governance,” he stated.
Martinez also highlighted the Briceno administration’s broader strategy of resilience, arguing that crises have been used as opportunities to implement reforms and strengthen the economy.
“Today, Belize has a government that does not retreat in the face of challenge… but rises to meet it with innovation and decisive action,” he said.
