By Breaking Belize News Staff: The lone suspect charged in last week’s triple murder on San Pedro has been transported to Belize City and is now on remand at the Belize Central Prison.

At around midday on Tuesday, 22-year-old Shelby Jonathan Hernandez, a fisherman of the San Pedrito area, was ferried off the island aboard the 10:00 a.m. boat and brought to Belize City following his arraignment late Monday evening. He was escorted through the Belize City Magistrate’s Court before being transferred to the prison facility in Hattieville.

Hernandez, who appeared unrepresented in the San Pedro Magistrate’s Court on March 23, 2026, was read three indictable charges of murder. No plea was taken due to the nature of the offenses, and bail was denied. He has been remanded until May 27, 2026.

He is accused of the murders of 28-year-old Karim Nazim Espat, a fisherman of the DFC area; 35-year-old Oscar Modesto Mas, a carpenter of Mosquito Coast; and 21-year-old Yerlin Marisol Bueso Alvarez, a Honduran national of the San Mateo area, all of San Pedro Town.

According to police, the fatal shooting occurred on Thursday, March 19, 2026, at an elevated wooden house located about one mile south of San Pedro Town. Investigators say three men dressed in hooded jackets entered the yard, and one of them went inside the house and opened fire, fatally injuring Espat and Mas, who were found at the scene. Alvarez was transported to the San Pedro Polyclinic but later succumbed to her injuries shortly after midnight.

Police recovered multiple expended shells, including 9mm casings and 12-gauge cartridges, from the scene. Several witnesses were also interviewed as part of the investigation.

Hernandez was detained shortly after the incident and formally charged on March 21. He remains the only person charged in connection with the triple homicide as investigations continue.
