Local markets affected by Mexico’s reported cartel blockade at Northern border

By Breaking Belize News Staff: Trade between Belize and Mexico has been significantly disrupted following reports that criminal groups have halted cargo movements at key border crossings.

The interruption is already impacting the availability of goods in local markets.

Reports indicate that cartels operating in Quintana Roo have imposed an illegal “fee” on cargo trucks, effectively blocking passage for operators.

Such demands—often described as unofficial tolls or taxes—have long been imposed on transporters moving through parts of Mexico.

Belizean transmigrantes, who frequently transport salvage vehicles from the United States through Mexico, have historically encountered these charges along established routes. However, the practice now appears to be extending to commercial freight operations near the Belizean border.

Importers in Belize have raised concerns as the disruption continues, noting that perishable goods, including fruits and vegetables, are being delayed and in some cases spoiling on the Mexican side.

The situation is affecting the steady flow of some fruits and vegetables into Belize.
