By Tracy Panton, Leader of the Opposition:  The ongoing dispute involving the Belize Sugar Cane Farmers Association (BSCFA), Belize Sugar Industries Ltd. (BSI), and Tate & Lyle Sugars has brought to the forefront an issue that goes far beyond contracts and courtrooms. At its heart, this matter is about fairness, dignity, and the rights of Belizean cane farmers.

The Government’s recent offer of financial assistance, reportedly contingent upon the withdrawal of the farmers’ legal claims, raises serious concerns. While any effort to provide immediate support to our farmers is welcome, it must not come at the expense of their fundamental right to seek justice.

Cane farmers are the backbone of Belize’s sugar industry and a vital pillar of our rural economy. For generations, they have worked tirelessly to sustain their families, their communities, and this nation. They deserve our full support without conditions, without pressure, and without compromise.

The question before us is simple:

Should Belizean farmers be forced to choose between much-needed financial relief and their right to have their case heard in a court of law?  The answer is a resounding NO.

We recognize  that there are legal complexities surrounding Fairtrade premiums and contractual arrangements. However, this is precisely why the matter deserves to be tested and clarified through the judicial processfree from external pressure.

As the Opposition, we take a clear and principled position:

  • We support immediate financial assistance to cane farmers.
  • We respect their right to pursue their case before the courts.

We oppose any conditionality that forces them to trade justice for support.

Belizeans are a fair and just people. We stand with those who work hard, who contribute meaningfully, and who seek only what is rightfully theirs.

Let us support our farmers fully and let justice take its course.

“You cannot ask hardworking Belizean farmers to trade justice for survival.”

STAY AWAKE BELIZE!
