The STEM U Foundation is proud to recognize a major milestone in its ongoing work to strengthen technical and vocational education in Belize. Armando Lopez, a welding instructor hired by the STEM U Foundation and stationed at St. Ignatius High School, has earned American Welding Society (AWS) Certified Welder status. While he may or may not be the first in Belize to achieve this credential, he is certainly among the very few. AWS Certified Welder status is globally respected and recognized, reflecting training and assessment aligned with international industry standards.

This achievement reflects the Foundation’s continued investment in building high-quality, industry-aligned training opportunities for students in Belize. As a registered AWS Educational Institution Member and the AWS Fundamentals of Welding Curriculum Administrator for Belize, the STEM U Foundation continues to play an important role in strengthening technical education aligned with global standards.

Mr. Lopez’s certification is an important step in that effort. His accomplishment not only reflects his professional skill and commitment, but also strengthens the quality of welding instruction being delivered to students at St. Ignatius High School through the Foundation’s partnership with the school.

St. Ignatius High School Principal Jeaneane Neal recognized the value of the partnership and the impact of this milestone on students and the wider school community.

“We have been in this rewarding partnership for 3 years now with STEM U Foundation,” Principal Neal remarked. “We give thanks to God for the opportunity to serve our students and school community with such high-quality, internationally recognized programs. This certification not only validates our instructor’s expertise but also empowers our students with skills that are recognized across the globe, truly welding a path to a brighter future for Belize.”

Jarrus Mitchell, Director of the STEM U Foundation, said the milestone reflects the Foundation’s broader mission to create stronger pathways between education, industry standards, and workforce development in Belize.

“This is another opportunity for the high school and our foundation to powerfully demonstrate our commitment to supporting world-class vocational and technical education and training right here in Belize.”

Through its work with school and industry partners, the STEM U Foundation continues to advance technical training, workforce readiness, and student opportunity in Belize.
