By Zoila Palma: Today, Leader of the Opposition Tracy Panton wrote a satirical response to the Prime Minister’s recent comments regarding the case of Ryan Budna.
During Love FM’s Morning show on Monday, Prime Minister John Briceno said that he is going to recommend to cabinet for the Government of Belize to request that Budna be brought to Belize to serve his time in prison.
“Greetings from government of Belize who is currently struggling to explain how one of its own citizens was beaten, unlawfully detained, forcibly transported across borders, and handed over to a foreign state without due process, without dignity, and without regard for the Constitution we swore to uphold,” Panton said.
“We now find ourselves in the uncomfortable position of having to pretend that this was all somehow lawful, justified, or even remotely defensible. In light of the public backlash, I write to request the immediate return of Mr. Joseph Ryan Budna,” Panton added.
Panton says that now, Belize is open to a “mutually beneficial” arrangement, perhaps a prisoner swap to correct the “public relations crisis”.
“Accountability, after all, can be terribly inconvenient. The people of Belize are asking questions. Unfortunately, we are running out of answers,” the Leader of the Opposition stated.
