By Zoila Palma:  On March 11, 2026, the United States Southern Command Humanitarian Assistance Program donated nearly BZ$3 million in fire equipment to the Belize National Fire Service (NFS), toward strengthening Belize’s emergency response capacity.

The official handing over ceremony brought together representatives from the Government of Belize, U.S. Embassy Belize, and the Belize National Fire Service.

The donated equipment includes handheld radios, oxygen tanks, Hurst rescue tools, cutting saws, portable pumps, and full firefighting gear.

These resources will enhance the operational readiness of firefighters and improve their ability to respond effectively to emergencies, protect lives, and safeguard property across Belize.

U.S. Embassy Chargé d’Affaires, Katharine Beamer said, “This donation is a testament to the enduring friendship between the United States and Belize. It reflects our shared dedication to protecting lives, strengthening communities, and ensuring that those who serve on the frontlines have the resources they need to succeed.”

Minister of the Public Service and Disaster Risk Management Henry Charles Usher, welcomed the donation and highlighted its importance for the continued strengthening of the Fire Service and thanked the U.S. Embassy for its continued support to the NFS in terms of infrastructure, equipment, and training.

He commented, “This assistance is critical in ensuring that our firefighters have the facilities, tools, and resources needed to serve communities effectively across the country. In effect, it represents a significant investment in the safety and well-being of the Belizean people.”

This year is a milestone year for both countries as the United States is celebrating the 250th anniversary of its independence and Belize achieves 45 years of nationhood.

These new resources will support the Belize National Fire Service in carrying out its critical role as first responders, providing firefighters with the tools and protective equipment to safely serve and protect communities throughout the country.
