By Breaking Belize News Staff: A Belize City construction worker has been remanded to prison after police allegedly found him in possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition during an operation along the Philip Goldson Highway.
Thirty-one-year-old Glenn Delbert Murillo Jr., of Belize City, appeared unrepresented before a Senior Magistrate in Court #2 at about 10:14 a.m. on Thursday. He was charged with one count of kept firearm and one count of kept ammunition without a gun license.
Murillo Jr. pleaded not guilty to both charges. However, due to the nature of the offenses, he was denied bail and remanded to the Belize Central Prison until May 11, 2026.
Police say the incident occurred on Wednesday, March 11, 2026, at around 5:50 p.m., when officers attached to the Mobile Interdiction Unit (MIU), Special Branch, and the Quick Response Team (QRT) conducted an operation at a home near Mile 13 on the Philip Goldson Highway.
According to police, while securing the area, police observed a man of Creole descent with dreadlocks who, upon seeing officers, walked behind the house and discarded an object onto the ground outside the building.
The man was detained and searched but nothing incriminating was found on his person. However, officers checked the area where the object had been discarded and reportedly recovered a black and silver Smith & Wesson 9mm pistol.
Police say the firearm contained a magazine loaded with 15 live rounds of ammunition, including seven Aguila-brand rounds, three S&B rounds, three additional 9mm rounds, and two Luger-brand rounds.
Murillo Jr. was subsequently informed of the offenses and escorted to the Ladyville Police Station, where he was formally identified and later charged.
