By Zoila Palma: On March 11, 2026, Mayor of Benque Viejo del Carmen Jorge Rosales addressed Mount Carmel Primary School’s Standard 6 students about the impact of climate change and how the council is adapting to it through various municipal projects.
Mayor Rosales said that the Benque Viejo Town Council has embarked on a recycling project at Coffins Creek to recycle used tires and create a barrier for the creek walls to address the erosion.
Through this project, the Benque Viejo Town Council is reducing tire piles at the transfer station in our area.
These tires are extremely combustible, trap methane gases and collect rainwater, creating stagnant water that acts as an ideal breeding ground for mosquitoes, which are carriers of diseases.
The second project involves collecting branches, leaves and grass produced within Benque Viejo Town and converting them into wood chippings.
The council says that the chippings will be mixed with chicken manure and other organic waste to create organic fertilizers for local farmers.
“ Through these projects, Benque Viejo Town is contributing to the reduction of methane gases and becoming a climate resilient Town. Mayor Rosales also shared methods for filtering water and the importance of keeping our town clean. Through aquaponics, it is a way of life and also a way of generating income as a sustainable way of living,” the council said.
Mayor Rosales further encouraged students to become environmental agents of change and to visit the Benque Viejo Town Council if they have any environmental projects they would like to conduct in town.
