By Breaking Belize News Staff: A Los Lagos resident has been fined $4,505 after admitting responsibility for more than 400 grams of cannabis discovered during a police search of his home.
Thirty-eight-year-old Hasni Jamere Thurton was jointly charged with his common-law wife, 29-year-old Brittany Alexis Blair, with possession of a controlled drug with intent to supply following a police operation at their residence at their Los Lagos home.
The couple appeared before Senior Magistrate Mannon Dennison in Court #6. Thurton, who was unrepresented, pleaded guilty to the charge, while Blair pleaded not guilty.
In light of Thurton accepting responsibility for the cannabis, the charge against Blair was withdrawn and she was free to go.
According to police, officers executed a search warrant at the home on Friday, March 6, 2026, at around 2:45 p.m. Blair was present at the house at the time.
During the search, police reportedly found a bowl-shaped container with green leafy substances on a table near a refrigerator. A further search of a cabinet under the sink allegedly led to the discovery of additional containers with suspected cannabis.
The substances were later weighed on a scale at the Ladyville Police Station and amounted to 416 grams of cannabis (14.6 ounces or almost 1 pound).
In court, Thurton told the magistrate the cannabis was not intended for sale but was for personal use and to share with friends at a planned birthday gathering.
However, the prosecution did not accept a plea to simple possession, and Thurton instead pleaded guilty to possession with intent to supply, which carries the same penalty as drug trafficking.
As a result, the court fined him $4,500 plus $5 in court costs, totaling $4,505. The fine must be paid by December 31, 2026, in default of which he will serve 10 months’ imprisonment.
