By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The Premier League of Belize 2026 Closing Season table tightened after Week 7, with Verdes maintaining their lead, Progresso staying firmly in the chase, Belmopan holding third, and Wagiya finally climbing after earning their first win of the campaign. The weekend’s results reshaped the middle and lower half of the table, while the top two continued to separate themselves from the pack.
Verdes remain in command
Verdes sit atop the standings with 18 points from seven matches, powered by six wins and a league‑best defensive record. Their 2–0 victory over Progresso in Week 7 reaffirmed their status as the team to beat, keeping them perfect at home and dominant across the first half of the tournament.
Progresso stay within striking distance
Despite the loss to Verdes, Progresso bounced back with a 2–1 comeback win over Benque United. They now stand on 16 points, just two behind the leaders. With five wins and only one defeat, Progresso remain the closest challengers in both the Closing Season and the cumulative race for the Concacaf Central American Cup berth. However, Verdes are all but qualified to the Concacaf Central American Cup.
Belmopan hold third despite mixed form
Belmopan’s 1–1 draw with Napoles and their earlier 3–1 win over Benque keep them in third place on 10 points. Their attack remains one of the most productive in the league, but inconsistency has prevented them from closing the gap on the top two.
Napoles and Benque level in mid‑table
Napoles and Benque United are tied on 7 points each, though their paths have differed. Napoles continue to draw matches—four so far—while Benque’s season has swung between strong wins and heavy defeats. Both remain within reach of the top four but need greater consistency to climb.
Port Layola continue to struggle
Port Layola’s 2–1 loss to Wagiya extended their difficult run. With six points, they sit sixth and have conceded heavily throughout the season. Their early promise has faded, and they now face pressure from the improving Wagiya.
Wagiya finally break through
After earning their first point last week, Wagiya secured their first win of the season with a 2–1 victory over Port Layola. The result lifts them to four points, still last but now within touching distance of the teams above them. Their recent improvement suggests they may yet climb further.
