By Zoila Palma: FIFA President Gianni Infantino says he has received assurances from U.S. President Donald Trump that Iran’s national football team will be allowed to travel to the United States to compete in the 2026 FIFA World Cup 2026, despite the ongoing war between the two countries.
The United States is set to host the tournament alongside Canada and Mexico from June 11 to July 19.
Iran has already qualified for the 48-nation tournament and is scheduled to play its group-stage matches in the United States, AP reports.
The team is set to face New Zealand on June 15 in Inglewood, California, followed by a match against Belgium on June 21, before concluding group play against Egypt in Seattle on June 26. However, Iranian officials had recently suggested that the country’s participation could be uncertain because of the conflict.
Infantino said he met with Trump on Tuesday night to discuss preparations for the tournament and the situation involving Iran.
In a statement posted on Instagram, Infantino said Trump reiterated that the Iranian team would be welcome to compete in the United States. Infantino also emphasized that the World Cup is an event that brings people together, adding that global sporting events are especially important during times of international tension.
