By Breaking Belize News Staff: A Belize City fisherman accused of trafficking cannabis avoided jail time on Tuesday after pleading guilty to possession of a controlled drug with intent to supply.

Kareem Smith, also known as “Stamma,” appeared unrepresented before Senior Magistrate Mannon Dennison in Court #6 of the Belize City Magistrate’s Court, where he was read a single charge of possession of a controlled drug with intent to supply 112 grams or almost 4 ounces of cannabis.

Smith, a resident of #10 Croton Lane, Belize City, is the third person charged in connection with the drug bust. Two women, Michelle and Celene Moses, were previously charged and are currently out on bail awaiting trial.

Before entering his plea, Smith asked the court for a sentencing indication. After being informed that he would likely receive a fine rather than prison time due to his early guilty plea and the fact that it was his first drug conviction, Smith accepted the indication and pleaded guilty.

Senior Magistrate Dennison subsequently fined Smith $2,000 plus $5 in court costs. He has until October 31, 2026 to pay the fine, in default of which he will serve six months’ imprisonment.

Police say the cannabis was discovered during an operation on February 12, 2026 at about 6:39 a.m. at a yard on Croton Lane in Belize City. Officers had received information about suspicious activity in the area near an abandoned lot.

Upon arrival, police encountered two women who told officers they lived at the property. During the search, officers noticed a male individual who suddenly fled the area by running through the nearby abandoned lot. Police later identified the man as Kareem Smith.

Smith was eventually detained on Saturday, March 7, 2026 and subsequently charged.
