By Breaking Belize News Staff: A 30-year-old former call center employee has been remanded to prison following his arraignment for the execution-style murder of street figure Edward Saldano Jr., also known as “Scrubby.”
Paul Elver Sambula was escorted to the Belize City Magistrate’s Court shortly after 9:00 a.m. on Tuesday under heavy police guard by the GI3 unit. Sambula, who told the court he had been employed as a call center agent, was taken before Senior Magistrate Mannon Dennison in Court #6 at around 9:45 a.m.
He was read a single charge of murder in connection with the fatal shooting of Saldano on Thursday, March 5, 2026. Due to the nature of the offence, no plea was taken and Sambula was remanded to the Belize Central Prison until May 6, 2026.
Police allege that at around 12:30 p.m. on March 5, Saldano was riding a bicycle along Amara Avenue heading toward Dean Street when he was confronted by his attacker at the corner of Amara Avenue and Dean Streets. Reports indicate that after a brief encounter, Saldano jumped off his bicycle and attempted to fight with the gunman. However, after being shot once and weakened, he fell to the ground where the assailant stood over him and fired additional shots as captured on surveillance video in the area.
Saldano was rushed to hospital but later succumbed to his injuries.
Just three days before his death, Saldano had appeared in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court in Court #3 in connection with an old robbery case. He had recently been granted bail in January after spending more than three months on remand, making him the last of five individuals charged in that firearm robbery matter to be granted bail.
