By Zoila Palma: On March 5, 2026, the Ministry of Blue Economy and Marine Conservation joined national and international partners at the ECOLENS Summit.
The summit was held under the theme “Focusing on People and Nature” and was hosted by the Protected Areas Conservation Trust and Belize Fund for a Sustainable Future – Belize Fund.
Minister of Blue Economy and Marine Conservation Andre Perez, delivered special remarks highlighting Belize’s leadership in ocean conservation and the importance of ensuring that environmental protection supports communities and livelihoods.
Minister Perez noted, “For Belize, conservation is not about locking nature away from people. It is about ensuring that nature continues to sustain people.”
During the summit, Belize also reaffirmed its commitment to regional ocean governance by formally endorsing the Actioning Blue: Caribbean 30×30 Vision and Roadmap for Our Ocean, an initiative that brings Caribbean nations together in a shared commitment to conserve at least 30% of marine and coastal ecosystems by 2030.
Through the implementation of national policies and strategies such as the Belize Sustainable Ocean Plan, the Blue Economy framework, and the country’s marine protected areas system, Belize is on track to conserve up to 30 percent of its ocean space by the end of this year.
The Ministry said that the ECOLENS Summit provided a valuable platform to exchange knowledge, highlight Belize’s achievements in biodiversity conservation, and strengthen partnerships that ensure the country’s natural resources continue to benefit present and future generations.
