By Zoila Palma: The United States and Venezuela announced Thursday that they will restore diplomatic and consular relations, AFP reports.
The decision was announced as U.S. Interior Secretary Doug Burgum concluded a two-day visit to Venezuela as part of efforts by U.S. President Donald Trump’s administration to expand access to the country’s vast mineral resources.
The U.S. State Department said the re-establishment of relations would help promote stability and support economic recovery in Venezuela.
It added that engagement with the country is intended to help Venezuelans move forward through a phased process aimed at creating conditions for a peaceful transition to a democratically elected government.
Venezuela’s foreign ministry welcomed the move, saying the countries would enter a new stage of constructive dialogue based on mutual respect, sovereign equality and cooperation between their peoples.
The ministry said renewed ties between Washington and Caracas would be positive and mutually beneficial for both nations.
