International News: American Airlines cleared to resume flights to Venezuela

By Zoila Palma:  American Airlines has received approval to resume regular flights to Venezuela, becoming the first U.S. airline to restart service to the country, AP reports.

The approval was granted Wednesday after U.S. President Donald Trump ordered the Transportation Department in January to reopen commercial airspace over Venezuela following a U.S. military operation that ousted then-president Nicolás Maduro.

Although the U.S. State Department continues to advise Americans not to travel to Venezuela, the government has cleared the airline to begin scheduling flights.

American Airlines had been the last U.S. carrier operating in the country before suspending its routes in 2019, which included flights from Miami to Caracas and the oil hub city of Maracaibo.

The airline has not yet announced specific details on the routes or schedule for the resumed service.

However, the move is expected to restore direct travel between the United States and Venezuela for the first time in several years, after diplomatic relations between the two countries deteriorated in 2019.
