By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Long‑time sports coordinator Wilson Franklin Pat, 58, known across western Belize for his decades of service to youth sport and community development, is appealing to the public for urgent financial assistance as he faces overwhelming medical expenses for kidney failure treatment and a critical spinal surgery.

Pat spent many years in the public service, including a long tenure with the National Sports Council, where he served as Sports Coordinator for the Benque Viejo del Carmen area. In that role, he coached football and volleyball at schools in Benque Viejo, San Jose Succotz, Calla Creek, and Arenal, and accompanied junior teams to the Central American CODICADER Games on several occasions. He also supported clubs such as IRKA FC of San Jose Succotz and played a key role in the recent revival of the Cayo Volleyball Association, helping to rebuild competitive volleyball in the district.

Pat was always active, constantly travelling between communities, organizing tournaments, and mentoring young athletes. But worsening kidney problems forced him into early retirement at age 52, and his health has continued to decline.

For more than a year, Pat has required dialysis three times a week, each session costing $300. Although he receives government assistance, the recurring cost remains heavy. His condition has now worsened further: slipped discs in his spine have left him bedridden and unable to walk for the past month, and doctors have recommended urgent spinal surgery. The procedure is expected to be done in Guatemala, adding travel and specialist expenses to an already overwhelming financial burden.

Pat says his family have exhausted their resources and are now turning to the wider Belizean community for help.
