By Zoila Palma: The United States military carried out a strike that sank an Iranian warship off the coast of Sri Lanka, triggering a rescue operation by Sri Lanka’s navy, three U.S. officials told Reuters.
One official, speaking on condition of anonymity due to the sensitivity of the matter, said the strike was conducted by a U.S. military submarine.
The attack prompted a distress call, leading Sri Lankan armed forces to launch a search and rescue mission in the Indian Ocean.
Officials in Sri Lanka said 32 people had been rescued so far and several bodies recovered from the sea.
Sources within Sri Lanka’s navy and defence ministry reported that at least 101 people were missing following the incident, which occurred off the country’s coast.
However, a Sri Lankan navy spokesman rejected reports that 101 individuals were unaccounted for and dismissed claims regarding the cause of the vessel’s sinking.
The strike forms part of a broader U.S. military campaign against Iran.
U.S. strikes on Iran’s navy are described as central to the war launched by the United States on Saturday.
