By Aaron Humes: A preliminary finding indicates that Edwin “Drive” Flowers, 43, of Belize City, sustained two massive cerebrovascular accidents (CVA) – in common parlance a “stroke” – while out at sea on Sunday afternoon on the north side of Caye Caulker, Belize District.

Foul play is not suspected “at this time,” pending a postmortem examination, according to Assistant Commissioner of Police Hilberto Romero of National Crimes Investigation Branch. He indicated during a press briefing this morning that “Initial investigation is that Edwin Flowers was on a vessel when the vessel had mechanical problems; thereafter, he was seen in distress. He was taken to the Split and thereafter to the clinic for medical attention.”

According to a police report, at approximately 6:00 PM, authorities were alerted to a small vessel on fire near the Blue Zen Resort, located on the north side of Caye Caulker Village. Initial reports indicated that the vessel experienced engine failure but was being towed toward the Split Area. As police conducted checks in the vicinity, they noticed a golf cart speeding away from the area with an individual appearing to be unresponsive.

Upon arrival at the Caye Caulker Health Center, police found Flowers lying motionless on a bed. Flowers had been out fishing with his companion, 33-year-old Jafeth Bennett, when they encountered mechanical issues with their boat around 5:00 PM. According to Bennett, Flowers, the captain of the vessel, became frustrated and subsequently suffered a stroke. After receiving CPR, he briefly regained consciousness but unfortunately suffered another stroke upon arrival at the Split. Medical practitioners on-site provided immediate assistance, but he became unresponsive en route to the clinic. His body has since been transferred to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital morgue, where a post-mortem examination is pending.

Flowers was no stranger to police or the news as the reputed leader of the so-called ‘Peace in the Valley’ (PIV) gang based in Lake Independence, but he made recent efforts to turn his life around by joining the Leadership Intervention Unit (LIU) initiative, becoming a community leader.
