By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): Police have launched a search for a 25-year-old detainee who escaped lawful custody early Friday morning in Orange Walk Town.
Reports indicate that shortly after 6:00 a.m. on February 27, 2026, officers visited the cell block to allow detained individuals to bathe when the detainee requested to take a shower.
According to police, the man walked toward the shower area but suddenly ran upstairs toward the traffic office, climbed onto the rooftop, jumped down onto a pile of sand, and fled in a northern direction.
An officer nearby attempted to pursue him but was unable to apprehend him. Additional officers conducted searches in the surrounding areas, but efforts to locate him were unsuccessful.
The escapee had been detained in connection with a damage to property report. He is now wanted for escape from lawful custody.
Investigations continue.
