Two imported malaria cases confirmed in Toledo District

By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): The Ministry of Health and Wellness has confirmed two cases of malaria in Crique Sarco Village, Toledo District.

Health officials say the cases are classified as imported, meaning the infections were acquired outside of Belize. While the country remains malaria-free, the cases underscore the continued risk of transmission in neighboring countries and the possibility of reintroduction through travel.

Travelers visiting rural, forested or border areas in neighboring countries are urged to take precautions to prevent mosquito bites.

Malaria symptoms may include fever, chills, headache, body aches, sweating, fatigue, nausea or vomiting. Symptoms typically appear between seven to 30 days after infection.

Anyone experiencing fever or flu-like symptoms during or after travel is advised to seek immediate medical care and inform healthcare providers about recent travel history.

The Ministry emphasized that free testing and treatment are available at all public health facilities, as well as through community health workers and malaria voluntary collaborators.

Belize was declared malaria-free by the World Health Organization in June 2023. Health authorities say surveillance and response measures remain active to prevent local transmission.
