By Aaron Humes: Today, Wednesday, Christians around Belize and the world observe Ash Wednesday, marking the beginning of Lent. This significant day invites believers to shift their focus from the noise of the world to a season of introspection, renewal, and spiritual growth.
In Christian theology, Jesus of Nazareth retreated to the desert by himself for forty days and forty nights, praying, fasting and seeking guidance for his future Ministry while fending off the temptations of the Devil.
Ashes are imposed on foreheads, the faithful being reminded of the importance of humility and the strength that comes from faith. The ashes are made from the burned remains of palms gathered for decoration of the church in the previous year’s Palm Sunday.
This solemn yet hopeful start to Lent encourages a deeper connection with God and a recommitment to spiritual values.
Wishing all who observe a blessed and prayerful Lent season, culminating on Easter weekend in the first week of April.
