Water rates to increase: Public Utilities Commission approves 13.5 percent hike

64

By Aaron Humes: The Public Utilities Commission (PUC) has approved a 13.5 percent increase to the Mean Water Rate (MWR) for Belize Water Services Limited (BWSL), falling short of the 20 percent rate increase requested by the company.

The decision, amending the initial decision made on November 17, 2025, is expected to result in an average increase of approximately 5.5 percent on customers’ monthly bills.

After reviewing feedback from BWSL, the PUC introduced a minimum charge for water consumption of up to 600 gallons, ensuring low-usage customers contribute to the costs of supplying water. This will cost $5.52 for customers obtaining water on the mainland other than Belize City and Belmopan; $6.63 cents in those municipalities; $14.85 for water per gallon on Caye Caulker; and up to $16.19 for water and sewerage on Ambergris Caye.

The Final Decision is available at the PUC website or the PUC office at Marina Towers, New Town Barracks in Belize City.
