By Aaron Humes, Belmopan: The expected opening is behind schedule, but the National Bus Company is preparing to hit the road.

This afternoon in Belmopan, the Ministry of Transport provided a stakeholders’ update to the press and others.

Minister Dr Louis Zabaneh indicated that in the morning Ministry officials met with the owners of the 17 separate lines forming part of the NBC before this afternoon’s press conference.

One director, the Ministry’s Anna Loague, is holding over at the moment; the others are expected to be appointed after the 17 owners formally subscribe to the project later this week, at a general meeting set for February 27. The NBC formally launches on Sunday, March 1.

The expected outcome is improved service and innovation and less congestion of buses on the roads, with members owning shares and participating in its running.

Minister Zabaneh said he expects prices set per mile not to change “for the foreseeable future,” while CEO Chester Williams told us that as many currently employed workers as possible will transfer to the new service alongside new hires. He noted that they will have to meet certain employment criteria to have guaranteed jobs with the NBC.
