By Zoila Palma: On February 9, 2026, the Ministry of Agriculture hosted a soft launch for the Anticipatory Action for Drought in Belize program.
The launch included the participation of Minister of State in the Ministry of Agriculture Alex Balona, who offered remarks where he indicated the Ministry’s readiness to support farmers to ensure the country’s food security.
World Food Program representative Greta Aubke also offered remarks, as she described the program and its purpose.
The Ministry noted that the program will impact more than 800 households across the country, with activities including identifying drought-prone communities, training farmers on what action to implement, and conducting advocacy and capacity development events.
“Once a climate event meeting drought criteria has been identified, such actions as early cash transfers, distribution of drought-tolerant seeds, water trucking, and community awareness campaigns will take place as part of the program. The goal is to mitigate the adverse impacts of drought on food security, livelihoods, and the well-being of vulnerable households before the full onset of drought,” the Ministry explained.
The Ministry’s focal point for the program is Director of Extension Andrew Mejia.
