National Trade Union Congress of Belize calls out Opposition for attempting to break into Social Security Board

By Zoila Palma:  Today, the National Trade Union Congress of Belize (NTUCB) and the UDP had organized protests in front of the Social Security offices in Belize City.

The NTUCB continues to call on Social Security as a shareholder in Belize Telemedia Limited (BTL) to oppose the proposed acquisition of Smart.

During the protest this morning, the UDP attempted to go into the SSB offices just as they attempted to run into the BTL offices last week.

But, NTUCB chair Ella Waight said that the union is protesting but it is not associated with any political party.

Waight said that if the UDP would go into SSB, then their members would have to defend and protect members of the union.

“With the opposition trying to go into the office, the way they did it, our members are scared now. It defeats the purpose of why the union is out here, we are not here to break up anything. This is Social Security Board, the meeting isn’t even happening in there what would they do if they go in there? Attack our members? Then these people will go in there and protect our members,” Waight said.

“So we’re asking hold it down mein. This is not why the NTUCB is out here,” Waight added.
