By Breaking Belize News Staff: A 22-year-old Belize City resident has been remanded to prison after being arraigned on two counts of keeping ammunition without a gun license, but questions remain over exactly how many bullets police say were found in his possession.

Kylin Brently Thompson appeared unrepresented before the Chief Magistrate in Court #1 on Monday.

Police allege that on Sunday, February 1, 2026, Thompson was found with ammunition during an encounter with officers on patrol. However, during the reading of the police facts, the Chief Magistrate noted that the report appeared “jumbled” and unclear, with conflicting accounts from different officers about what was seen and what was recovered.

One version of the report stated that officers, while in the area around 9:30 a.m., saw Thompson sitting on a verandah. He was allegedly seen turning and throwing two transparent bags. Officers claimed he told them he had thrown away a bag of marijuana. Police then searched behind a dog house in the area where the bag was allegedly thrown and reportedly found a transparent zip-lock bag containing three rounds of ammunition — two 9mm rounds and one bronze-colored round. He was subsequently detained and taken to the Raccoon Street Police Station where he was charged.

A separate report, however, suggested that another set of officers saw Thompson throw “an object,” without specifying what it was. That report also referenced the recovery of ammunition, describing two Aguila rounds and one regular round. The discrepancies prompted the Chief Magistrate to question whether two, three, or even five rounds of ammunition were actually recovered, as stated in different parts of the file before the court.

The matter was briefly stood down for the prosecutor to verify which report accurately reflected the incident, but the confusion remained unresolved. The Chief Magistrate indicated that the issue would ultimately be a matter for trial.

Thompson pleaded not guilty with an explanation but was advised that he need not offer any explanation at this stage, as it is for the prosecution to prove its case.

Before leaving the courtroom, Thompson stated that police had allegedly told him that if he handed over a firearm, he would not be charged. He maintained that he had no gun and no bullets in his possession. The Chief Magistrate noted his statement on the record.

Due to the nature of the offenses, bail was denied, and Thompson was remanded to the Belize Central Prison until May 6, 2026, pending trial.
