Police officers who filmed vile sex video to face third High Court trial

By Breaking Belize News Staff: Two Belize police officers accused of videoing a couple having sex in an abandoned house will return to the High Court for a third trial, this time before Justice Derick Sylvester.

The officers, 51-year-old Jason Shaw and 44-year-old Leslie Martinez, are charged with wilful oppression. Allegations state that on April 5, 2020, the officers abused their authority by forcing a couple to continue sexual activity while they recorded them. The video was later shared on a police WhatsApp chat and went viral.

Their first trial was abruptly discontinued, and the second trial ended in a hung jury, with nine women and one man unable to reach a verdict. Following that, the retrial was transferred from Justice Candace Nanton to Justice Sylvester.

Shaw and Martinez, who are out on bail and currently interdicted, appeared in court last week, represented by attorney Leroy Banner. Crown Counsel Maria Nembhard Santana represents the prosecution.

Justice Sylvester ordered that the notes of evidence from the first full trial be prepared. The Case Management Conference (CMC) for the retrial is scheduled for February 16, 2026.
