By Zoila Palma: Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum announced Sunday that her government plans to send humanitarian aid — including food and essential supplies — to Cuba this week, even as diplomatic strains with the United States intensify.
The announcement follows comments by U.S. President Donald Trump that he urged Sheinbaum to suspend Mexican oil shipments to the Caribbean island, a claim she denied discussing with him during a recent phone call.
According to AP, Sheinbaum said that her administration is working to “diplomatically solve everything related to the oil shipments … for humanitarian reasons” while ensuring that aid reaches Cuban families, hospitals and essential services.
She clarified that the planned assistance will be coordinated by Mexico’s Navy, emphasizing solidarity and the need to avoid a worsening humanitarian situation on the island.
The commitment to continue humanitarian support comes against a backdrop of Cuba’s deepening energy crisis and heightened U.S. pressure.
