By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): Police have arrested and charged a Guatemalan national in connection with a fatal road traffic accident that claimed the life of a Belizean police officer.
The fatal accident occurred on Friday, January 30th, 2026, around 7:25 p.m., between miles 30 and 31, and resulted in the death of Marcos Acal, 48, a Belizean Police Special Constable of San Roman Village, Stann Creek District.
On Saturday, January 31st, 2026, police formally arrested and charged Juan Carlos Estrada Prado, 30, a Guatemalan self-employed resident of Santa Cruz Village, Guatemala.
Estrada Prado has been charged with manslaughter by negligence, causing death by careless conduct, drove without due care and attention, fail to report an accident, and fail to stop and render aid.
Police say he was issued copies of his charge sheet, cautioned, and chose to remain silent. He has been remanded into custody until Monday, February 2nd, 2026.
