By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The U17 Belize Women’s National Team (U17 BWNT) suffered a 5–0 defeat to the Dominican Republic on Friday night in Group A of the Concacaf Women’s U17 Championship at the Miguel “Chocorrón” Buitrago Stadium in Managua, Nicaragua.
Belize were stunned early, conceding two goals in the first five minutes. E. Asenjo opened the scoring in the 2nd minute, and Gía Marie Fernández doubled the lead moments later, putting the Dominican Republic firmly in control from the outset.
Belize settled defensively after the early setback and held off further damage until the second half, but the Dominican Republic resumed their pressure after the break. Jazmyn Díaz struck in the 54th minute to make it 3–0, before Asenjo added her second of the night in the 64th minute. J. Schwartz completed the scoring in the 72nd minute, sealing the 5–0 result.
In the day’s other match, the U.S. Virgin Islands earned a 2–0 win over Dominica.
The loss leaves Belize with one win and two defeats from their first three matches. The U17 BWNT will now look to regroup ahead of their final Group A fixture on Monday at 4:00 pm, when they face the U.S. Virgin Islands.
The young Belizean side continue to gain valuable international experience as they represent the country on the regional stage.
