By Zoila Palma: The Prime Minister today expressed gratitude to the outgoing Commandant of the Belize Coast Guard for his exemplary leadership, while voicing confidence in the incoming Commandant as the force enters a new chapter.
The transition marks a significant moment for the Belize Coast Guard, which welcomed its third Commandant in its 20-year history as the military body responsible for safeguarding our maritime spaces.
Rear Admiral Elton Bennett formally handed over command of the Belize Coast Guard to Captain Gregory Soberanis.
Rear Admiral Bennett assumed command of the Coast Guard in 2019, taking the reins while holding the rank of Captain. Over the years, he provided steady leadership during a period of growth and strengthened maritime security operations.
In 2021, after dedicating 25 years of service to the Belize Coast Guard, Bennett was promoted to the rank of Rear Admiral. He served as Commandant for six years before demitting office.
Rear Admiral Bennett has since taken up a new role as Chief Executive Officer in the Ministry of Home Affairs, where he continues to serve the nation in a leadership capacity.
