In celebration of the centennial of the birth of Puerto Rican composer Catalino “Tite” Curet Alonso, El primoroso cantar… will be launched, along with another book by the same author— Saberes Salseros — on February 6, 2026, at 6:00pm (AST), at Taller Comunidad La Goyco. Description: Catalino, Tite, Curet Alonso appreciated Afro-Caribbean music as an exquisite song distilled from the shantytowns and as a supreme expression of freedom and humanity. One hundred years after his birth, his songs continue to be a source of inspiration, racial pride, and class affirmation for the working-class Juan Albañils, Concepcions, Babaílas, Camilos, and Adolfinas who populate the Caribbean archipelago.
In El primoroso cantar de Tite Curet Alonso, Juan Otero Garabís pays a well-deserved tribute to the composer from Guayama, Puerto Rico, recognizing the poetic value of his lyrics in dialogue with the poetry of Julia de Burgos and Luis Palés Matos, and with the narratives of René Marqués and Edgardo Rodríguez Juliá. As Otero Garabís tells us, Tite— contrary to our literary pessimism —invites us to reclaim the pride of those who “defended the coast of Borinquen with their blood” and the pride of “the beautiful faces” that our history and society have sought to consign to mere shadows.
With this installment, the Otra universidad series from Editora Educación Emergente joins in the centennial celebration of Tite, who exquisitely sings of other facets of Puerto Rico.
