By Aaron Humes: Early Monday morning, police were alerted to an aggravated burglary at the Medina’s House of Jewelry branch at Northern Shops Plaza on the Philip Goldson Highway. The incident occurred around 4:30 AM; upon arrival, police officers met with a 57-year-old security guard, who recounted the details of the event.
He explained that while stationed in the security booth near the bathroom area, he heard someone shout “Police.” When he opened the booth door, he was confronted by three masked men dressed entirely in black, who claimed to be law enforcement officers.
One of the assailants brandished a firearm, holding the guard at gunpoint while tying his hands and feet with plastic straps. Another assailant remained in the booth with the guard while the third exited, and he heard the sound of glass breaking.
After several minutes, the individual with the gun departed, allowing the guard to lock himself in the booth and call for police assistance.
Investigators found that entry had been gained through damage to the padlock on the shutters and the glass door of the jewelry shop. Despite the break-in, the owner of Medina’s Jewelry confirmed that nothing had been stolen.
At Monday’s press briefing Assistant Commissioner of Police Hilberto Romero from National Crimes Investigation Branch commented on the possibility of inside assistance or knowledge, “We do not know at this time. That is all the information. He was tied up, and they broke into the building.”
As the investigation continues, police are urging anyone with additional information about the incident to come forward.
