By Zoila Palma: The Belize Chamber of Commerce and Industry (BCCI) issued a statement today thanking Belize Telemedia Limited (BTL) for agreeing to meet with their Executive this Wednesday, January 28th, 2026.
“The BCCI hereby publicly and unequivocally calls on the Government of Belize, as the controlling shareholder of BTL, to immediately intervene and halt any definitive or binding Board vote on the acquisition of Speednet/SMART, until after meaningful stakeholder consultation is completed,” the BCCI noted.
The BCCI says that any approval prior to Wednesday’s meeting and input from the private sector would render that engagement a hollow gesture and demonstrate profound disregard for the legitimate concerns of the business community and public.
The BCCI explained that their concerns include:
- The absence of competition law,
- Opacity surrounding ownership and valuation,
- Risks to public funds, and
- The threat of a private monopoly.
“Any decision made prior to our scheduled consultation is not governance, but yet a maneuver that undermines public trust and the national interest,” the chamber added.
