We are living in the greatest period in human history

By By Horace Palacio: It may not feel like it when you scroll through social media or watch the evening news, but the truth is undeniable. We are living in the greatest period in human history. Not because the world is perfect, but because human progress has never moved this fast, reached this many people, or created this much opportunity.

Globally, extreme poverty has fallen dramatically over the last century. Diseases that once wiped out entire populations are now preventable or treatable. Life expectancy has increased across almost every region of the world. Information that once belonged only to elites is now available to anyone with an internet connection. A child with a smartphone today has more access to knowledge than kings did a hundred years ago.

Technology has transformed how we live, work, and connect. Artificial intelligence, medical breakthroughs, renewable energy, and instant communication are reshaping what is possible. Problems that once took decades to solve are now addressed in months. Innovation is no longer limited to a few countries. It is global, fast, and increasingly accessible.

Belize is part of this progress, even if we sometimes fail to see it. Roads, schools, hospitals, and connectivity have improved compared to previous generations. More Belizeans own homes, vehicles, and businesses than ever before. Education is more accessible. Healthcare has advanced. Opportunities that once required migration are increasingly available at home through digital work, entrepreneurship, and technology.

Belizeans today live longer, travel more, and have more freedom than any generation before them. We communicate instantly with family abroad. We can learn new skills online. We can start businesses with tools that cost almost nothing. These are not small achievements. They are historic.

Critics will point to crime, inequality, and political dysfunction, and they are right to do so. Progress does not mean perfection. But it does mean improvement. The mistake many people make is confusing visibility of problems with decline. Today’s problems are more visible because information flows freely. In the past, suffering was hidden, normalized, or ignored.

Every generation faces challenges. Ours just happens to face them in public and in real time. That is not a sign of collapse. It is a sign of awareness. And awareness is the first step to improvement.

The greatest danger of our time is not that the world is falling apart. It is that people forget how far we have come and lose faith in the future. Pessimism paralyzes. Perspective empowers.

Belize and the world are not finished projects. They are works in progress. The tools we have today to solve problems are unprecedented. The speed at which ideas spread is unmatched. The ability for individuals to change their circumstances has never been greater.

This is not a call for complacency. It is a call for confidence. If humanity could achieve this much with less knowledge, less technology, and less coordination, imagine what is possible now.

We are not living in the end of history. We are living in its most advanced chapter yet.
