By Zoila Palma: Forbes has featured Belizean Marie Sharp and Belize’s hottest Hot sauce in 50 over 50 Global highlight.
After saying goodbye to a career teaching elementary school, Belizean entrepreneur Marie Sharp found a new calling in her own backyard. She began growing habanero peppers in her garden and experimenting with vegetables, laying the foundation for what would become one of Belize’s most recognizable food brands.
“In 1981, thanks to encouragement from close friends, she started selling the sauces. Before long, they were a hit and imported to the U.S. But a trademark battle eventually led to a name change,” Forbes noted.
The sauces quickly gained popularity and were soon imported to the United States.
A trademark dispute later forced a name change, prompting Sharp to relaunch her business in 1992 as Marie Sharp’s Fine Foods.
Today, the company has expanded beyond hot sauces to include jams and seasonings.
Sharp’s impact on the industry was formally recognized in 2016 when she was inducted into the Hot Sauce Hall of Fame.
