By Zoila Palma: A new nationwide poll suggests Venezuelans are broadly grateful to President Donald Trump for the removal of authoritarian leader Nicolás Maduro, but far less confident that the United States will help restore democracy.
The survey, conducted by the Caracas-based firm Meganálisis after the Jan. 3 U.S. military operation that ousted Maduro, shows widespread appreciation for the intervention alongside deep skepticism about Washington’s motives and plans.
According to WSUF, more than 90% of respondents said they are thankful to Trump for Maduro’s removal, who had been indicted in the United States on drug trafficking charges.
At the same time, more than half believe the U.S. president is more interested in Venezuela’s vast oil reserves than in defending human rights or democratic institutions.
More than two-thirds also rejected Trump’s claim that the U.S. is now running the country, saying figures from the former regime, including acting President Delcy Rodríguez, remain in control.
The poll highlights a sharp disconnect between Trump and Venezuelan public opinion over the country’s political future.
Nearly all respondents said Rodríguez and other regime holdovers should not lead the post-Maduro transition, and 78% said they would support opposition leader and Nobel Peace Prize winner María Corina Machado in a new presidential election, despite Trump’s assertion that she lacks sufficient domestic support.
Poll respondents also emphasized accountability, with three-fourths prioritizing “justice, order and rule of law” over reconciliation, and a strong majority calling for the release of Venezuela’s nearly 900 political prisoners.
