Sugar industry enters 2026 season with improved outlook and reforms

By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): Belize’s sugar industry has entered the 2026 crop season with renewed optimism following a year marked by uncertainty and disease-related challenges.

Belize Sugar Industries (BSI) General Manager Mac MacLaughlin said production is expected to surpass last year’s output of 900,000 tons, with projections placing this season’s crop at just over one million tons. While still below the mill’s historical capacity of 1.3 million tons, the forecast represents a notable improvement.

MacLaughlin outlined key operational changes aimed at improving efficiency and shortening the crop, including adjustments to the cane delivery system, expanded mechanized harvesting, and the introduction of new cane varieties grown from tissue culture to improve resilience, sugar content, and durability.

Minister of State Dr. Osmond Martinez reflected on last year’s crisis, noting that as recently as mid-2025, the industry faced uncertainty over whether a 2026 crop would even take place. He credited government intervention, stakeholder collaboration, and a $2.5 million public investment to arrest fusarium disease for turning the situation around.

Dr. Martinez said the combined efforts of government, farmers, associations, and the mill have positioned the industry for a 10% to 20% increase in production, with improved cane quality expected throughout the season.

Officials agree that while challenges remain, the 2026 sugarcane season represents a critical step toward long-term recovery and sustainability for one of Belize’s most important industries.
