By Zoila Palma: U.S. President Donald Trump sparked fresh controversy ahead of the World Economic Forum in Davos after releasing private text messages from European leaders and doubling down on his demand that the United States acquire Greenland.
In a series of overnight posts on his Truth Social platform, Trump mocked U.S. allies, shared excerpts of private exchanges with French President Emmanuel Macron and NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, and warned that “there can be no going back” on his push for control of the Danish territory.
The posts came just hours before Trump’s scheduled appearance at the Davos forum and one day after he threatened to impose new tariffs on eight European countries that oppose his Greenland proposal, Yahoo reports.
Trump has said the U.S. will acquire the Arctic island “one way or the other” and has not ruled out the use of military force. Speaking in Davos a day earlier, Macron warned that Europe would not give in to intimidation, saying, “We do prefer respect to bullies, and we do prefer rule of law to brutality.”
In his posts, Trump shared a text from Macron expressing confusion over the Greenland push and offering to convene a G7 meeting after Davos, as well as a more supportive message from Rutte, who praised Trump’s foreign policy efforts and wrote that he was “committed to finding a way forward on Greenland.”
Trump also posted an image depicting himself, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and Vice President JD Vance planting a U.S. flag on Greenland labeled “U.S. territory EST 2026.”
Trump has threatened to impose a 10 percent tariff on goods from Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, and Finland beginning Feb. 1, rising to 25 percent in June if no Greenland deal is reached.
